Cooling Foods & Ayurvedic Wisdom: Eating to Balance Your Body in Hot Weather:

As summer heat waves reach record highs, many feel burdened, overheated, and perhaps slightly irritable. Resilience will help us survive the heat on the outside and give us inward balance. According to Ayurveda (the ancient Indian system of medicine), each season is ruled by a dosha, and summer is dominated by the Pitta dosha (the heat element). In contrast, pitta imbalance is typically a sign of excess heat in the body and rightfully shows up as indigestion, acid reflux, rashes, anger, or just general hot body/mind. The silver lining is that we can flourish in the heat by practicing intentional, mindful eating and choosing foods that directly cool and balance Pitta.

Anti Ayurvedic Principle

Ayurveda is simply the science of life, saying that nature is full of opposites complementary to each other. Summer is hot, sharp, and fiery energy, so ideally, we eat more cool, sweet, mild, bitter, or astringent food. That is counteracting the heat we have built inside us. This is more than just the temperature of the food — a property known as very — hot or cold post-digestion.

Foods to Embrace for Cooling

How to cool down your Pitta dosha and be cool from the inside out– Add these food groups to your meal =

Whenever seeking some hydration, fruits with natural sweetness are always ok. Think about it: watermelons, melons, grapes, sweet berries, plums, and pears. They help restore your hydration levels and provide mild freshness.

Cooling Veggies: Most starch veggies are cooling by nature. Cucumbers, zucchini, leafy greens (spinach and kale), asparagus, and cilantro are all good examples. For most of these, uncooked is way cooler than home-cooked is.

Grains: Choose lighter grains for cooling support. Examples are basmati rice, barley, and oats, which are much less heating than wheat or corn (also avoid corn as they are more heating)

Mung beans and lentils: This are the most belly-friendly options in Ayurveda.

Perhaps Really Cooling Healthy Fats: ghee (clarified butter), coconut oil

Mild Spices: Even though the majority of spices produce warmth (in Ayurveda, this is called heating), there is a handful that is balancing or cooling (think cilantro, mint, fennel, cardamom, and saffron).

Foods to Limit or Avoid

It is also wise to do less or none to avoid further heating the body with the foods that are aggravating Pitta:

Acrid, acidic, and saline tastes: Hot spices, very tangy fruits (green mangoes or excessive lemons), and too high-salt meals increase the heart within.

Hot Vegetables: Do not take hot vegetables such as onion, garlic, radish, and chillies.

Fried or too much Oil-Based Foods: Deep-fried and excess oil-based foods are difficult to digest and produce more heat.

Red Meat: This is extremely healing for the entire body. Lean fowl or fish in small amounts must be used.

These are probiotics and, therefore, beneficial for Vata dosha and gut profile; however, they should be avoided for Pitta constitutions as they are heating by nature.

ALCOHOL AND CAFFEINE —Both create more heat in the body

Hydration and Meal Timing

Aside from what you eat, you should also ensure you hydrate well. Sip on room temperature/warm or cool water throughout the day. Water is amazing — it quenches thirst and tastes refreshing, even with  mint, cucumber, or lime. It is highly advised that you drink coconut water, too. In meal timings, Ayurveda states that lunch is the heaviest meal of the day because (Agni) the digestive fire is the strongest during lunch so that the body can process food without much heat. There will be, at night, one cooler body, better digestion, and lighter dinner, so you should not eat too close to bedtime. Maybe the constitution may be the biggest. The Constitution is not so difficult to sail through the summer heat, and one can feel quite comfortable, grounded, and energized by the following Ayurveda!
